Ganesh Chaturthi - Origin & Traditional Significance

There is an interesting tale surrounding Lord Ganesha’s birth. It is believed that once Goddess Parvati carved a human figure out of unguent and balm, brought him to life, and asked him to stand guard at the door while she bathed. Incidentally, Lord Shiva chose that very moment to drop by to see Goddess Parvati-his consort, but was stopped by Lord Ganesha whom Goddess Parvati had assigned to guard the door. Outraged by the cheek of a stranger, Lord Shiva beheaded Lord Ganesha in anger, only to discover moments later that he had killed Goddess Parvati’s son.

Worried about the consequences, Lord Shiva immediately dispatched his Ganas (attendants) to get him the head of the first living creature they could find. Ironically, the first living creature turned out to be an elephant. IT is that elephant’s head that got placed on Lord Ganesha’s body by Lord Shiva himself, thus bringing him back to life.

This elephant-headed God was joyously welcomed into the first family of the Hindu heavens and named Ganesha or Ganapati, which literally means the chief of the attendants of Lord Shiva. This cute, lovable pudgy-armed God with an adorably rounded stomach is considered today as the most auspicious God of new beginnings.

The worship of Lord Ganesh is not just reserved for Ganesh Chaturthi. You will find Ganesha idols placed near the entrances of temples, homes, and offices. You can also see him on the pages of calendars and placed as a sign of good omen on marriage cards. So what are you waiting for? Offer your prayers to Lord Ganesha by buying puja items online today.
