Sweets are such an integral part of the Indian lifestyle, you cannot imagine ceremonies and visits without them. Whereas the kaju katlis and rasgullas form the usual fare, there are a number of other unique delicacies from across India – traditional as well as experimental – that need to be tasted to believed.
Here are some of them to remember, the next time you buy sweets online.
- Choco pista laddu : Chocolate and pistachios are flavours that do not come together commonly in Indian confectionery – and so when they do, it forms a uniquely delicious combination. Chocolate laddus, coated with slivers of pistachios that give it a green flaky exterior, are definitely worth a try.
- Akhrot burfi : In India, the most popular dry fruit used to make sweets is cashew nut, followed by figs and almonds. So if you have not tried walnut burfi yet, it is probably because it is not a treat available at your nearest sweet shop. Rose pink blocks of this nutty delight garnished with crushed walnuts, akhrot burfi is as scrumptious as it is expensive!
- Translucent fruit katli : Karachi halwa comes close to this stunning mithai, with its translucent body studded with chopped nuts. However, there is just something about these shiny diamond-shaped fruit katlis, completely translucent with a delicious chewy texture – that will draw you in. Available in a number of fruity flavours such as mango, strawberry, pineapple, orange, and kiwi, these are equally tasty and attractive.
- Pootharekulu : Weighed down by rich dry fruit mix and pure ghee, the regular sweets might seem heavy on the scales as well as palate for some people. Enter pootharekulu, the paper-thin crispy folds of rice flour coated with sugar, and even comes in flavours of jaggery, cardamom, and dry fruit. A popular delicacy in Andhra Pradesh, it is a unique treat for the rest of India.
- Honey-dry fruit mithai : Dry fruit mithai in India is mostly sweetened with sugar syrup or jaggery – so to find something different is quite a unique experience. And that’s where honey-dry fruit mithai comes in. Cubes of crunchy and nutty dry fruits enrobed in honey – making it a much healthier option.
