During the 1940's, a gifted Italian confectioner Pietro Ferrero had a long-standing dream of introducing the richness of fine chocolates to the world. He knew that he had to revolutionize his fellow countrymen’s concept of buying chocolates. He started working on this ambitious dream in 1946.
In those times, confections, cakes, and pastries were made only for certain celebratory occasions. Italian consumers were extremely choosy about the seller, making it more difficult for Pietro. Local small manufacturers and pastry shops were much favoured, but Pietro’s vision of was not limited to such small establishments. He wanted fellow Italians to consume and relish original premium candies and have the same, widely available and at affordable prices.
A Global Chocolate Sensation
By the time it was the 1980s, Ferrero Rocher went global and how! The toughest country for Ferrero Rocher to charm with its heavenly, chocolaty charm was undoubtedly China. The country having been a closed economy; it had not experienced the taste of foreign goodies including chocolates resulting in a decline in the economy. To rectify this self-harming situation, China opened its doors to foreign trade, especially the Big Five chocolate establishments (Nestlé, Mars, Cadbury, Hershey's, and Ferrero SpA). There is nothing like the first impression and Ferrero Rocher left no stone unturned in leaving the first generation of China awestruck with its nutty goodness. Ferrero Rocher not only trumped other foreign chocolate competitors, but it also firmly entrenched itself in the hearts of Chinese chocolate lovers. Astonishingly, for the Chinese, the gold wrapper and the delicate packaging made the chocolate appear more luxurious, exotic, and moreover meaningful. Furthermore, they started associating the gold wrapper with good fortune and wealth, making it the best possible marketing strategy for Ferrero Rocher chocolate.
